so i might have my first cavity hmm

i blame panama for its insane sugar intake, that even 2 or 3 brushes a day and floss cant fight haha. oh well its cool, that means i get to go to the city at some point. oh, and random fact.. panamanian cats have 7 lives. so i typed up a blog the other night at home, be prepd for a bunch of rambling

Overall I feel like I’ve had a pretty successful past week or 2 even though I also feel like I’m slacking off half the time.. which is awesome because that’s pretty much what we do. I went to penonome for a peace corps city tour, did that and ended up pretty much hanging out there for 3 days. Couple days later I went to Barrigon to help Kayla with a project at her school, and ended up pretty much hanging out there for 2 days. I gotta get a little better at bringing my camera around cuz I’ve taken no pictures lately.

One day I went to penonome only to pick up a package (which ended up coming in the next day.. ill grab it later this week) so that day coulda been a total slack off day.. but I decided to introduce myself to ANAM in Cope (my hub town if I hadn’t mentioned it before) on the way there, when they told me about a recycling parade the next day, giving me one more little success in the midst of doing nothing haha. Then I went to the parade, which had a little drum corps and students marching around with flags (again, no pictures.. I’ll probably google a picture to give you an idea, it looked exactly the same as the eco-parade my training group did, but I also have no pictures of that ;) ). I ended up meeting up with Glenda the volunteer in cope, getting some beers and playing smash brothers at the video rental store. She introduced me to someone who works with tourism in cope, giving me a way better idea of what ultimately needs to be done with the project in LB, so I got that little success for the day. Even if all I did for one day was walk around and meet one new family, its something. Today I finally met the family who I’m gonna rent from.

Considering the 3 peace corps goals are 1. Help the community, 2. Share American culture with them, and 3. Learn Panamanian culture and share it with Americans (this blog).. I think so far I’m on track. I taught my family here (where I’m actually moving out of this weekend) about werewolves and the full moon. None of them have ever heard of them and a few actually thought it happens in the states which was funny, so I obviously had to show them how hairy I am and tell them I’m a werewolf.

What else? I taught my 10 yr old host bro how to say “domo arigato mister roboto” and konichiwa.. so they think I’m a genius cuz I can speak a million languages. Counting to 3 in Japanese, german and hebrew helps too. Whats crazy is this kid can remember the words from the freakin styx song in Japanese but can’t remember the easiest words in English that he learns over and over.

I’m actually surviving without my ipod since my phone has its FM radio, even though the stations with American music play the worst stuff of all time so I usually listen to regatone or tipico (edit: i actually found some good music, drained the battery in one night listening and playing snake.. got a high score hah). If I really feel like treatin myself nice I’ll bust out my computer with my own music. OH, so I finally found harry potter on the streets lol (compared to the book.. eh, but it was alright). Now I’ll probably sit around one day and listen to the 7th book on tape again after I finish the banana book. I’m actually in LB on my comp right now, which is probably why I’m rambling so much. I’ve been playing a lot of guerra lately (war). My bro is a huge tramposo, I used to catch him but now I just let him do it so the game can end faster. Panamanian card games are kinda funny/ridiculous, so guerra is the way to go. I just learned cribbage and I’ve been wanting to play but its pretty unteachable here so I needa meet up with a volunteer to play.

I decided I’m probably not gonna start teaching English yet, at least not in the school until next school year starts. Brianna has been teaching this year.. shes leaving in a month midway through the schoolyear but I think I’ll wait. She also does one day a week of environmental ed which is what I’m gonna keep up. I’ve been her apprentice pretty much in the schools which is cool cuz its helped me ease into everything. Other work I’ll eventually get going on is in the viveros (tree nurseries for reforestation), random work in the granja, and the tourism project. I want to start some work on the trail, which doesn’t need money, just some manual labor.. building the visitor center looks like its at a stand still for now. Poco a poco.

Baile, few days in Penonome

The other night I went out to my first baile in panama, which is a big community party with live music, dancing, drinks and cockfights. Not a huge fan of watching roosters fight to the death no matter how muh i hate em. Was fun though, getting to see everyone ive met having fun and meeting more people, but no matter how good my spanish has gotten, drunk spanish is a whole new thing to understand haha. my favorite line was someone calling me "JAMES BOND! zero zero siete!" and the guy who only speaks in madeup sign languge after a few drinks. everyone wanted to buy the gringos drinks and we were getting shoutouts from the stage.. then they announced that EU beat panama 2 to 1 in futbol, /high five. eventually the generator went out and bottles started flyin, so the cops hopped in.. which was the cue to leave haha . no worries though, everyone claims that there are usually no drunken machete fights in the LB lol

lately i've been waking up with that feeling like im back home in my bed. im not homesick or anything, so im not sure why. maybe its bc all of these host families and i still dont have a real home base in town to call mine yet. anyway, the four of us newbs from cocle met our regional leader (RL) in Penonome for a tour of the city and agency visits. I feel like ive been here for so long since I came on saturday (not sure why haha) then back to LB for the baile at night, then came back sunday to stay 2 nights here. waking up in a hotel and using a hot shower feels like fantasy land compared to the last few months. especially when i walk out of an internet cafe i go "oh yea i'm still in panama".

My area is pretty sweet because even though my pictures everything look like i'm way the hell out there, compared to some of the others, i got it pretty good. ive got a bunch of cool people nearby, plus its super easy to get out of town when i need/want to. Either way, compared to the states.. were all way out there haha.
I could just keep blabbin, but i think this is all i got. quick shoutout to anyone that might be reading, mom dad greg michael (congrats on your internship), the mama and the papas, maria, all the other friends and family out there who probably dont make it past facebook but thats ok haha and mr. rosa

pictures

project with samuel from the environmental guias (guides from meduca, the ministery of education)
next few pictures are from a hill above my house familys house, its where i go to get cell signal when im not down in the center of town. this first month ive been living about a 20 minute hike up a hill from the main part of town. the next 2 months and the house im hoping to move into are down below

there in the center of the pic is loma bonita

closeup of LB
other random art from the guias
the abuelas b-day
cutting and splitting bamboo, i ended up making a few cups out of it

this is the solar dryer at the granja, i dont have a finished pic but now its got plastic roofing and walls. jenny and brooks, volunteers nearby started this project with brianna a little while ago and just finished it up.. glad i got to help because when im on my own, ill know how to store the plastic during summer and fix it if anything happens
my potential house is in there somewhere
and there it is. its pretty big inside, full cell señal which is nice. theres no latrine but ill probably end up pooping in a bucket and using it as fertilizer ;).. a composting latrine. like ive said theres no electricity in LB but ill probably end up getting either a solar panel to charge some things and have a little light, or ill get a car battery.. or ill get lazy and do neither haha

First few weeks in Loma Bonita

Everyday I'm here I like it more and more.. my spanish is getting better which i usually don't realize but it is.. i'm meeting way more people day by day, and i usually have random things to do.  so there really hasn't been any boring moments

For now theres a volunteer here, who extended so she has been around for close to 3 years.  She'll be here until early September? but its been cool, I get to speak english sometimes plus shes a good way to see whats going on in the community.  I've tagged along to a few english/environmental ed classes (the teachers/school here are awesome.. some places they are not).  The other day I got a chance to help out with a project that a few volunteers from the area were working in the granja.  Its a solar dryer for coffee/corn/whatever else.. looks like a little green house, I'll post some pictures.  I don't have the final pic with the plastic roofing but its cool, you'll get an idea.  I've been going to church and the padres de familia (PTA) meeting, where I didn't expect to see breast feeding but there it was. hopefully i'll slowly be apart of the community here. looks like most people like their gringos

I have 2 more months with host families.. i'm hoping around for a total of 3, then I'll get my own house.. which I think I have found, but things may change.  hope everythings goin well in the states, heres some pictures

Oh and you all know I was never a reader, but I read a ton down here haha. I'm starting book 5

so far.. the watchmen, fear and loathing, electric koolaid acid test, devil's highway, starting one called Junky

new mailing address again

So if you're sending me a package, use the same address I had before (the Miami one specific for packages).. but heres a new address for regular mail.  It'll probably take a bit longer to get to me.. but instead of costing me, it should be free or close to nothing ;).

Moving to site, new mailing address

So todays the day, we just finished a few days relaxing at Santa Clara beach and since Loma Bonita is so close.. im taking a few hours in penonome to get some lunch and get online for a bit.

I set up a safe and relatively fast mailing service in the states for packages and mail. Itll be listed to the right here it is

If you are sending me regular mail, post cards.. letters.. send it to..

Eventually Im going to set up a different PO box for regular mail (still using the Florida one for packages) but for now, this is what Ive got.

Also.. my cell here is 6871 3377.. country code is 507. leaving a voice mail is the best bet because most likely i wont have signal

Im pretty excited, but also getting a little nervous for moving out there. Itll just take a little adjusting. Probably wont be posting on here as often, but ill try to get out every 2 weeks or so.

Happy early 4th of july.. ill be celebrating it in the form of a 3 year olds b-day party tomorrow

talk to you all soon
