potato sack walls + wind = no walls

Not a whole lot has been going on here, but I thought I should post something at least to say hey to everyone reading.

Got a few meetings coming up and then big name Alfredo is coming to play in Ojo de Agua.. so i´ve been getting dance lessons. Besides English classes and the occasional bingo/movie fundraiser, I´ve been pretending to go to the beach (laying a towel on my roof.. yep its January and I can do that) and reading.. finally finished off Lord of the rings. The wind TORE up the walls of my latrine so bugs or not.. back to the bucket, no choice haha. My shower is holding on though.

Work-wise.. february shouldn´t be too different than what ive had going on. As far as cultural exchange goes.. I´ll be making my way to the playa for the superbowl and then meeting up with Doug in the city. We´re gonna head out to bocas for a few days and then to Chitre/Las Tablas for the rest of Carnival. I keep hearing rumors of the "world´s 2nd biggest carnival, right behind Rio" so I´ll fill you in later.

Should have a new puppy set up. Its not born yet, so I´ll probably have it after I get back from the states in April

backup plans..

having a backup plan is the key to getting anything done around here.. i made that a rule a long time ago, yet i keep forgetting to make them.

we had our leadership seminar last week.. where we bring our work counterpart. i had it all set up to bring the secretary of the group i'm supposed to be working with.. shes young and involved, and it really would have helped my work relationship with that group (they tend to not do anything or try to work with me).. but she bailed last minute. Something to do with a new baby in the family and ya ya, I took it as a legit excuse.. but if she really wanted to come out, it could have been worked out. She had also bailed on Brianna with the initial meeting in June and sent someone else to find me last minute.

So as I'm heading down the huge hill with my big ass bag back to my house, I see nikki pass by in a car. she quickly realized what happened to me, since her partner bailed on her last week. She had some time to find a replacement, but I thought I was SOL. I eventually convinced a 17 year old kid to come out, who really has no involvement with any groups at the moment. It ended up working out well though.. he got something good out of it, got to see the beach for his first time and well.. I was able to go haha.

Fernandito's family.. the one who came with me to the meeting has saved my life in the past too. I had set up a bingo/movie night at the school for stove fund raising.. but the teacher didn't bring the keys to the school on time. I was pretty much at a loss of what to do, but I was able to do the whole thing at their house.. they helped me fry up the olhadres, set up the movie, collected money.

Well.. what else is new here? Ah.. the dog I was going to get died. Was playing around and rolled into a creek? Sad story. Uhm.. I'll end on a good note. Carnival is coming up, doug is coming out for that.. should be fun. Then in April I'll be in the states (wooo) for 2 weeks.

Anyway, gotta get going.. need to pick up some materials for the next fundraiser and get a haircut.. the whole shaggy hair thing doesnt work out with all this wind. Plus, I forgot about my backup plan rule and didn't bring a toothbrush/deodorant.. so I don't want to get stuck. I always hope what I say makes sense in these blogs, because I usually never proof read them

Año Nuevo

blogs are so much easier with just pictures haha. here's new years. the scarecrowish old dude (viejo) is burned right at midnight.. loaded with firecrackers. in with the new and out with the old type of thing. i was playing with fireworks and let someone video tape it all, but it ended up being HUGE so i don't think i can get it online.

hmm.. i'm starting to work again. i presented the stove project at the padres de familia meeting and announced my english classes. the class ended up being 5 or 6 kids that live near the school, but hey.. it was kinda fun, we did some english and played tag. i'm doing a bingo and movie night with the same few kids to save some money for the stoves.

what else? i ate iguana.. it was pretty good. they left the skin on for me just so i would know that it was an iguana that i was eating haha
